Facility Condition Assessment and Dam Rehabilitation Projects
The goal of a facility condition assessment is to analyze the condition of a facility or piece of infrastructure. The condition determines the level of safety and function. Facility condition assessments are done by skilled professionals such as architects and engineers. Data is collected, analyzed, and used to create comprehensive plans for maintenance and dam rehabilitation.
Water Tank Assessment and Rehabilitation
A Texas Section of ASCE article demonstrated the importance of detailed assessments in order to rehabilitate damaged structures. In early 2020, an earthquake more than 200 miles east of El Paso, Texas, damaged El Paso Water tanks. The Sunset Heights Pump Station and Reservoir is a decades old structure that delivers water to many parts of El Paso. The earthquake caused the facility’s tanks to leak. Some of the damage found was present before the earthquake, but repairs became necessary after the natural disaster.
Engineers introduced technologies and materials new to water resource facilities to address the repairs. Carbon fiber was used to reinforce the reservoir. The ASCE article states, “it is a method commonly used in the oil refining industry to rehabilitate tanks. It’s an innovative approach to reinforce steel that is often corroded and weakened by corrosive environments.”
Through effective analysis, engineers identified the scope of damage and created a proposal for repair and dam rehabilitation.
